This three-day, two-night tour combines wilderness lodge stay on the Upper Suriname River with structured Maroon cultural engagement. Choose between three resort options: Knini Paati Lodge (smaller, traditional), Anaula Resort (larger, more comfort-focused), or Danpaati River Lodge (mid-sized, well-appointed riverside). All include full board, river activities and guided village visits. The program operates with shared departures.

Full itinerary

Day 1
Paramaribo to Resort

8:00 AM departure from Paramaribo accommodation. Three- to four-hour drive south to Atjoni. One- to one-and-a-half-hour pirogue journey upriver to your chosen resort. Arrival in time for lunch. Afternoon: orientation walk and free time at the resort. Evening: dinner and group activity (depends on group size, may include traditional drumming or storytelling).

Day 2
Maroon Village Visit and River Activities

Morning: pirogue to a nearby Maroon village for community-led tour with stops at the mission post, school, medical clinic and elder's compound. Cultural context on Maroon history, the 18th-century escapes from Dutch plantations and the preservation of Saramaccan language and African-derived practices. Ethnobotanical forest walk with focus on plants used for food, medicine and ritual.

Return to resort for lunch. Afternoon: free time or optional activities (river swimming, canoe paddling, fishing). Evening: dinner and traditional Maroon dance performance (if group size permits, typically minimum 8 guests).

Day 3
Morning Activities and Return to Paramaribo

Morning: optional activities (river swim, jungle walk). Late morning: pirogue downstream to Atjoni, then road transfer to Paramaribo. Arrival approximately 6:00 PM.

Three resort options. Knini Paati: 12 lodges, traditional feel, screened cabins with mosquito nets, shared or private bathrooms, generator power evenings. Anaula: 27 cabins, more amenities, air-conditioned cabins available, private hot-water bathrooms, pool. Danpaati: mid-sized Maroon-owned property, balanced comfort and authenticity, private bathrooms, full meal service. Choose at booking based on preference.
Fitness level
Light to moderate. Walking on village paths and forest trails, boarding pirogues, time outdoors in tropical heat.
Cultural engagement
Village visits are conducted respectfully with local permission. Photography of people requires consent. Dress modestly when visiting communities (cover shoulders and knees). Approach with respect and curiosity.
What to bring
Quick-dry clothing, swimwear, water shoes or sandals with straps, insect repellent, flashlight, modest clothing for village visits, sun protection, refillable water bottle. Laundry not available.
Booking requirements
Passport copy required at booking for resort reservations. Book at least two weeks in advance during peak season (February to mid-April and mid-August to mid-December).
