This full-day boat and walking tour explores the Commewijne district across the river from Paramaribo, the heartland of Suriname's 18th- and 19th-century plantation economy. The tour combines river travel with stops at the Nieuw Amsterdam Open Air Museum (the 18th-century Dutch fortification at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers) and visits to two preserved plantations, Rust en Werk (a former coffee and later sugar plantation) and Frederiksdorp (an 18th-century coffee plantation now restored as a heritage resort).
The full day allows for substantial time at each site, including lunch at Frederiksdorp's restored estate. Pink belly dolphins are commonly sighted during the river crossings.
What to expect
8:30 AM departure from Leonsberg pier by traditional tent boat (covered wooden vessel) along the Suriname and Commewijne Rivers. Pink belly dolphins frequently sighted during crossing, the boat slows for observation.
First stop: Rust en Werk, a former coffee plantation that turned to sugar in 1889. Tour preserved brick factory buildings, overseer's residence and slave quarters foundations. Guide provides context on the plantation economy, slavery and indentureship.
Second stop: Frederiksdorp, an 18th-century coffee plantation now operating as a heritage resort. Tour the preserved main house (now museum), worker housing and coffee processing buildings. Third stop: Nieuw Amsterdam Open Air Museum, the 18th-century Dutch fortification at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers.
