This full-day tour visits Plantation Reynsdorp, locally known as Bakkie, an old coffee plantation along the Warappa Creek in Commewijne. The plantation has been carefully restored by descendants of the original plantation families, who have transformed the grounds into a small resort and a remarkable private museum.
The tour combines river travel through Commewijne's plantation belt with a guided walk through the restored plantation grounds and a visit to Museum Bakkie. The museum holds an unusual collection of original prints and books, including 1st-edition works by Captain John Gabriel Stedman (1796), the illustrator Benoit (1839) and the naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1699), all of whom documented Suriname during the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection also includes the original Act of Recognition of Suriname (1975) and the Abolition of Slavery Act signed by Willem III.

What to expect
8:00 AM departure from Hotel Torarica. Guests make their own way to the meeting point. Drive across the Wijdenbosch Bridge to Alkmaar, where you board a boat for the journey along the Commewijne and Warappa creek system. Approximately 50 minutes by boat through plantation country.
Arrival at Plantation Bakkie. Guided walk through the plantation grounds with interpretation on the coffee era, the slavery period, the emancipation transition and the family's restoration work. The walk includes the plantation's restored buildings and gardens.
Visit to Museum Bakkie. The collection is unusually rich for a private museum, including 1st-edition prints and books by Stedman, Merian and Benoit, original colonial-era documents, locally-found artifacts (old bottles, brand marks, the "crooked buoy") and family heirlooms tied to the plantation's history.
Lunch at the plantation. Return journey by boat and road, arriving back at Hotel Torarica by approximately 4:30 PM.
