The city preserves the largest concentration of wooden buildings in the Caribbean and South America, with structures dating from the 17th to early 20th centuries reflecting Dutch and British architectural influences.
The tour covers major landmarks including Fort Zeelandia, Independence Square, the Presidential Palace, St. Peter and Paul Basilica, the Palm Garden, Central Market and Paramaribo's religious triangle, a mosque and synagogue standing side by side.
What to expect
9:00 AM pickup from Paramaribo accommodation. The walking tour begins at Fort Zeelandia (17th-century Dutch colonial fort housing Suriname Museum). Visit Independence Square (site of Suriname's 1975 independence declaration), surrounded by colonial government buildings and the Presidential Palace (exterior viewing). Walk through the Palm Garden (19th-century botanical garden with royal palms and colonial monuments). Continue to St. Peter and Paul Basilica (1885 wooden cathedral, 44 meters tall, Gothic Revival interior). Visit the Synagogue and Mosque, standing side by side on the same street. Drive to Central Market, vendors selling produce, fish, textiles and street food representing Suriname's diverse cuisines. Adjacent Maroon Market for traditional herbs and medicinal plants. Final stop: the Waterkant (waterfront), colonial wooden buildings with covered balconies along the Suriname River. Return to accommodation by approximately 12:00 PM.
