This expedition accesses Mount Kasikasima, a granite massif rising from primary rainforest in southeastern Suriname near the Brazilian border. It is run in partnership with the Trio and Wajana communities of the Upper Tapanahony. The trip begins with a flight to Palumeu and continues by dugout canoe up the Tapanahony and Palumeu rivers to a base camp at the foot of the Sawaniboto waterfall. From base camp, you climb to one of the peaks of Mount Kasikasima for panoramic views over the Amazon rainforest. On clear days, the Brazilian border is visible.
The expedition is available in two durations: a 5-day version focused on the core mountain climb, and an 8-day version that adds intermediate river camps, the Kodebaku Falls hike, an Amerindian camp visit and an additional free day at base camp. Both versions use hammock camping at the base of Kasikasima. The 8-day version is recommended for travelers wanting fuller immersion in the Amazon interior.
This is genuine adventure travel. The level of physical effort, the simplicity of jungle conditions and the multiple days without telephone or radio contact differentiate this from a standard guided tour.
Full itinerary
11:00 AM departure from Zorg en Hoop airport. Flight to Palumeu, 75 to 110 minutes. Welcome at the lodge by Trio and Wajana staff. After check-in, dugout canoe to Palawa Island for picnic lunch and swimming. Afternoon: visit Palumeu village. Evening: expedition briefing covering safety, gear and jungle protocols.
**8-day:** Loading provisions into the dugout canoe is a team effort, everything carried for the next several days must fit. Boat trip along the Tapanahony and Palumeu rivers, three to seven hours depending on water levels. Arrival at camp Kamakabari, where the team sets up hammock camp under guidance. Afternoon: optional swimming, fishing, natural massage at the rapids. Evening: dinner prepared by the cook.
**5-day:** Dugout canoe trip directly to base camp, three to seven hours including a portage past the Trombakasula rapid. Late afternoon arrival, hammock setup. Early dinner, early sleep.
**8-day:** Break down camp, reload the boat. Boat continues upriver, multiple rapids to navigate. At Trombakasula rapid, the dugout canoe cannot pass. The group disembarks and carries provisions on foot over a hill to a second canoe waiting upstream. Late afternoon arrival at base camp at the foot of the Sawaniboto waterfall. Hammocks set up. Evening: briefing on the Kasikasima climb.
**5-day:** Approximately 7 hours round-trip with 1 hour at the summit. Lunch on the plateau. Afternoon return to base camp for dinner and campfire (weather permitting).
**8-day:** Sturdy jungle hike to the foot of Mount Kasikasima, then climb to one of the peaks. Approximately 7 hours total round-trip, including 1 hour at the summit for panoramic views and lunch on the rock plateau. Wildlife on the route may include cock-of-the-rock at the foot of the mountain. Descent in the afternoon. Massage in the rapids upon return to base camp. Evening: dinner and campfire if weather permits.
**5-day:** Dugout canoe back to Palumeu. Picnic lunch on the way. Optional traditional paddling section. Afternoon and evening at the lodge.
**8-day:** Sturdy jungle walk to Kodebaku Falls. Guide interpretation on flora, fauna and Trio and Wajana mythology along the route. The walk includes a possible visit to a small two-family Amerindian camp if the families are present. Afternoon: optional fishing or relaxation at base camp. Evening: night boat trip on the river to listen for nocturnal jungle sounds.
**5-day:** Pre-dawn drift downstream. Morning visit to Palumeu village with handicraft purchase opportunities. Afternoon return flight to Paramaribo.

Break camp. Downstream travel is significantly faster than upstream. Wildlife along the way may include howler monkeys, caimans on the riverbanks and possibly a giant otter. Lunch served on the way. Afternoon arrival at Palumeu lodge for a comfortable overnight in cabins. Farewell to the cook and boatmen.
Morning: extended walk through Palumeu village with handicraft purchase opportunities directly from villagers. After lunch: return flight to Paramaribo.

The 8-day version is strongly recommended over the 5-day for first-time visitors. The river travel, intermediate camps, free day and second hike (Kodebaku Falls) significantly improve the experience. The 5-day is a faster-paced introduction for travelers with limited time who still want to summit Kasikasima. Can be combined with a Palumeu lodge stay before or after for travelers wanting both gentler cultural immersion and the demanding expedition.
