Kabalebo Nature Resort is a remote eco-lodge in southwestern Suriname, 240 kilometers from the nearest road. It is reachable only by small aircraft from Zorg en Hoop Airport in Paramaribo on fixed Tuesday and Saturday departures. The resort sits on the Kabalebo River within an unbroken expanse of primary rainforest. There is no road access, no neighboring villages and no light pollution.
The resort runs seven numbered daily programs that are sequenced to fit each duration: BWKW Jungle Walk, Kilo 3 Creek, Misty Mountain Top, Charlie Falls, Bivouac, Beechcraft Trail and Moi Moi Waterfall. The four, five and eight day options all draw from the same pool of activities, with longer stays adding rest days, additional treks and deeper opportunities for wildlife observation and birding.
Air-conditioned screened cabins, hot water showers, reliable electricity, a communal dining pavilion and a river-water pool allow for genuine remoteness without rough conditions. Guided wilderness activities each day include treks to Misty Mountain (granite inselberg with panoramic views), Charlie Falls and Moi Moi Falls, plus dugout canoe excursions on the Kabalebo River and surrounding creeks.
Full itinerary
Morning transfer from Paramaribo accommodation to Zorg en Hoop Airport. 90-minute flight west to Kabalebo over continuous primary rainforest. Landing on Kabalebo's private airstrip.
Upon arrival, transfer to lodge (5 minutes). Welcome briefing, lunch and check-in to your cabin. Afternoon orientation walk on one of three trails: the Beechcraft Trail (passing a 1959 crashed aircraft now a historical artifact in the forest), the path to BWKW Rapids, or the route from Misty Mountain to Sand Creek. Each walk combines forest hiking with a short dugout canoe segment.
Dinner at the communal pavilion.
Five-hour round-trip trek to the summit of Misty Mountain, a granite outcrop rising above the forest canopy. Trail ascends through primary rainforest with frequent stops for wildlife observation, spider monkeys, red howlers, poison dart frogs, toucans, macaws. Summit offers panoramic views over unbroken forest, on clear days, 50+ km visibility.
Lunch at summit. On descent, stop at Charlie Falls for swimming in cool cascades. Return to lodge by mid-afternoon. Evening: dinner at communal pavilion.
Downstream by dugout canoe (30 minutes) to the trailhead. Two-hour walk through lowland forest with interpretation focused on forest ecology, nutrient cycling, symbiotic relationships between species and the role of rivers in seed dispersal. Moi Moi Falls is a multi-tiered cascade where lunch is served.
Return canoe journey includes deliberate stops for bird observation, kingfishers, herons, caimans, occasionally capybaras along the banks. Return to lodge by late afternoon. Dinner at the lodge.
Final morning at the resort: downstream canoe to Kilo 3 Creek, a narrow tributary. Short forest walk to Kilo 3 Rapids for swimming. Lunch creekside.
After lunch, return to the lodge to collect belongings and transfer to the airstrip for return flight to Paramaribo. Upon landing at Zorg en Hoop, transfer to your hotel.
Five-day and eight-day stays follow a longer sequence drawing from the same daily program pool, with additional rest days, Bivouac, the Beechcraft Trail and repeat excursions sequenced to your length of stay.
