This half-day walking tour explores Georgetown, Guyana's colonial-era capital and the country's economic and cultural center. The city features distinctive Dutch- and British-influenced wooden architecture, vibrant markets, religious landmarks and a sea wall built to protect the city, much of which sits below sea level.
The tour covers Georgetown's most significant landmarks alongside everyday market and street life, providing a contextual introduction to Guyana's diverse population (Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Indigenous, mixed-race and others) and colonial-era infrastructure.
What to expect
9:00 AM pickup from Georgetown accommodation. The walking tour begins at the Botanical Gardens, with stops to observe the manatee pond, monkeys and tropical plant collections.
Continue to St. George's Cathedral, one of the world's tallest wooden structures, opened 1892 in Gothic Revival style. Tour the interior, including the stained-glass windows and timber framework.
Walk to Stabroek Market, a cast-iron Victorian market hall on a site trading since 1792. Browse the stalls selling produce, spices, textiles, fish and gold. Visit Parliament Building (exterior) and the Public Buildings, examples of British colonial architecture.
Final stop: the Demerara seawall, the coastal defense system that protects the city. The seawall is a popular gathering spot for residents, particularly in the late afternoon.
