This three-day, two-night expedition explores Fredberg, a 350-meter granite inselberg rising from primary rainforest in central Suriname. Fredberg is a herping and birding destination, accessed by 4WD vehicle and forest trek with hammock camping at the summit basecamp.
Best suited for active travelers comfortable with rustic conditions, multi-hour treks and basic facilities. The expedition is operated with experienced local guides and porters.
Full itinerary
Early morning departure from Paramaribo (6:00 AM). Drive south to Brownsweg, approximately 3 hours. Transfer at the Saramacca River to the base lodge, which has regular flush toilets, cold-water showers and a communal cooking area, the starting point for the trek into Fredberg. Lunch at the base lodge.
In the afternoon, continue by 4WD vehicle to the Fredberg trailhead (1 to 1.5 hours on rough forest road) and trek with porters approximately 1 to 2 hours through primary rainforest to the summit basecamp. Summit basecamp consists of an open-sided shelter with hammock hanging points, a pit toilet, a bucket shower when water is available and a communal cooking area. Brief orientation walks around camp on arrival.
Evening: dinner prepared by guide, herping walk after dark with focus on dart frogs and tarantulas.
Pre-dawn wake for sunrise from the summit, panoramic views over unbroken forest, on clear days 50+ kilometers visibility. Breakfast at the summit camp.
Morning descent through primary rainforest with interpretation on forest ecology, medicinal plants and wildlife, arriving at the base lodge by late morning. Afternoon at the base lodge on the Saramacca River, swimming, fishing or rest. Evening dinner and an after-dark herping walk near the lodge. Overnight at the base lodge, which has regular toilets and cold-water showers.
Breakfast at the base lodge and an unstructured morning, optional short walks, river swimming or rest. Lunch at the lodge around midday, then the road transfer back to Paramaribo, arriving approximately 5:00 to 6:00 PM.
