Eight-Day Suriname Immersion

Your journey begins at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport. After clearing customs, you're met by your driver and transferred to your Paramaribo hotel, a 45-minute to one-hour drive depending on traffic.

The remainder of the day is yours. Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby the following morning to begin the program.

After breakfast, your guide leads a walking tour of Paramaribo's inner city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll visit Independence Square, the Palm Garden, Fort Zeelandia and the waterfront (Waterkant), where centuries of Dutch, Creole and Javanese influence are visible in a single streetscape. The route includes the Central Market and the Basilica, Mosque and Synagogue standing side by side.

In the afternoon, you travel to Peperpot Nature Park, a former coffee plantation now returned to secondary forest. The site is known for birdlife, toucans, parrots, herons and occasional sightings of capuchin monkeys and sloths. You'll walk the trails and visit the old plantation house before concluding with a boat trip on the Suriname River, where pink belly dolphins are sometimes seen. Sightings depend on tidal conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

You return to your hotel by early evening.

After breakfast, you depart Paramaribo for the drive south to Atjoni, a river settlement approximately three to four hours from the capital. At Atjoni, you board a motorized pirogue for the journey upriver to your jungle lodge, located on one of the river's many islands. The river route takes one to one and a half hours, passing through forested banks and occasional Maroon villages.

Upon arrival and lunch at the lodge, the afternoon includes a guided village walk. You'll visit community spaces and meet residents who provide context on Maroon history, social structure and daily life. The Maroon communities along this stretch are descendants of Africans who escaped Dutch plantations in the 17th and 18th centuries, maintaining linguistic, spiritual and cultural practices rooted in West and Central African traditions.

In the evening, if group size permits (typically a minimum of 10 guests), a cultural dance performance is arranged, traditional drumming and movement with social and spiritual meaning. Dinner follows, prepared using local ingredients.

The lodge offers screened cabins with comfortable beds, mosquito nets and shared or private bathrooms. Generator power provides electricity during evening hours. Meals are freshly prepared and served communally.

The morning is unstructured. Swim in the river rapids near the lodge, arrange a guided canoe trip with lodge staff, or walk nearby trails. The focus is on the river itself and the rhythm of village life.

After lunch, you begin the downstream journey back to Atjoni, then transfer by road to Paramaribo, arriving by early evening.

After breakfast, you depart for a three-hour drive west along the coast to the Nickerie district, the entry point to Bigi Pan. The route passes through rice-growing districts and coastal villages.

At the boat landing, you transfer to a motorized boat for the 45- to 60-minute journey through mangrove channels and open water to your overwater lodge. The lodge is anchored directly in the wetlands, individual cabins connected by walkways, surrounded entirely by water and mangroves. Your cabin has air conditioning, a private bathroom (cold water), a balcony overlooking the wetlands and WiFi.

After check-in and lunch, an afternoon boat excursion takes you deeper into Bigi Pan, a 68,000-hectare wetland reserve home to over 120 recorded bird species including scarlet ibis, flamingos, roseate spoonbills and kingfishers. Your guide focuses on bird identification and mangrove ecology. As dusk falls, the boat positions near roosting sites where flocks of scarlet ibis return from feeding grounds, their brilliant red plumage intensifying in golden hour light. After sunset, a second excursion targets caiman spotting along the water's edge. The night sky over Bigi Pan is striking, with no competing light sources.

Pre-dawn departure (approximately 6:30 AM) for a final birding session. Morning light and cooler temperatures bring peak bird activity, the optimal time for observation and photography. Target species include kingfishers, snail kites, roseate spoonbills and various herons and egrets.

After breakfast at the lodge, optional activities before departure include fishing or relaxing on your cabin balcony. After lunch, you depart Bigi Pan by boat and road, arriving in Paramaribo by mid-afternoon. The evening is yours.

Full-day excursion to two culturally significant sites. First stop: Jodensavanne (Jewish Savannah), South America's oldest Jewish settlement, established in the mid-17th century by Sephardic Jews fleeing persecution in Europe and Brazil. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. The ruins of the Beracha ve Shalom synagogue (consecrated 1685) survive alongside two burial grounds, one for the Jewish community and one for enslaved Africans who worked the surrounding plantations.

Second stop: Redi Doti, a contemporary Amerindian village of the Lokono (Arawak) people. The visit, conducted with community permission, includes a guided walk and introductions to traditional agriculture (cassava processing is often demonstrated), fishing techniques and craft production. This visit provides context on contemporary Indigenous experience in Suriname, land rights, language preservation and integration with national systems, rather than a static presentation of traditional culture.

Lunch included. Return to Paramaribo by early evening.
