Fourteen-Day Guianas Expedition

Your journey begins at Cheddi Jagan International Airport. After clearing customs, you're met by your guide and transferred to your Georgetown hotel, a 40- to 70-minute drive through Guyana's coastal landscape. The remainder of the day is yours. We recommend arriving in Guyana on a Friday or Saturday, as the scenic flight to Kaieteur Falls operates only on fixed days (Saturday and Sunday).

Early transfer to Ogle Airport for a 50-minute scenic flight over roadless rainforest to Kaieteur National Park. The falls drop 226 meters in a single plunge into a gorge surrounded by primary forest. Two hours on the ground with your guide providing context on the geology, the endemic golden rocket frog and the white-chinned swift population nesting behind the water curtain.

Return to Georgetown for a guided city tour, Botanical Gardens, St. George's Cathedral and Stabroek Market, then transfer to the airport for your commercial flight to Paramaribo.

Morning walking tour of Paramaribo's UNESCO-listed inner city: Independence Square, the Palm Garden, the waterfront and the Basilica, Mosque and Synagogue standing side by side. Afternoon at Peperpot Nature Park, birdlife, capuchin monkeys, sloths, concluding with a boat trip on the Suriname River for possible pink belly dolphin sightings.

Early departure to Albina, pirogue crossing into Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. Tour of the former penal colony complex, transportation barracks, director's residence, solitary confinement cells. Context on the approximately 70,000 prisoners sent here. Continue by road to Cayenne for a city tour (Place des Palmistes, central market with Hmong, Creole and Brazilian vendors), then onward to Kourou for two nights.

Full-day voyage to the Îles du Salut. Circumnavigate Devil's Island, explore Île Royale's prison ruins and Île Saint-Joseph's solitary confinement cells. Lunch is available for purchase on Île Royale before the return crossing.

Three-hour tour of Europe's spaceport (conducted in French, with translation), mission control, rocket assembly buildings and launch pads across 700 square kilometers of coastal rainforest. Overland return to Paramaribo via Saint-Laurent, arriving by early evening.

Drive south to Atjoni (three to four hours), then board a motorized pirogue upriver to your jungle lodge at Ferullasi Falls (one to two hours). The lodge sits at the base of small rapids with screened cabins, mosquito nets and communal meals from local ingredients. Afternoon unstructured, swim in the rapids, guided medicinal plant walk, or simply settle in. Evening cultural performance (traditional Saramaccan drumming and dance) subject to group size, or night canoe excursion for caimans and nocturnal birds.

Pirogue to Nieuw Aurora for a community-guided village visit, mission post, church, school, medical clinic. Context on 18th-century escapes from Dutch plantations, the treaties that granted autonomy and the preservation of Saramaccan language, spiritual practices and matrilineal social structures. Ethnobotanical forest walk. Return to Paramaribo by early evening.

Transfer to Zorg en Hoop Airport for the flight to the Wildlife and Nature Resort. The 90-minute flight heads west over continuous primary rainforest before landing at the resort's private airstrip. There is no road access, the lodge is genuinely isolated, surrounded by unbroken forest.

The resort is a collection of air-conditioned screened cabins on the banks of an interior river, with private or shared bathrooms, hot water showers and reliable electricity. A communal dining pavilion and a pool filled with filtered river water round out the facilities. The forest begins at the cabin edges, howler monkeys, toucans and parrots are audible throughout the day.

After check-in and lunch, the afternoon begins with an introductory forest walk on one of three trails: the Beechcraft Trail (named for a crashed aircraft now a historical artifact in the forest), the path to BWKW Rapids, or the route from Misty Mountain to Sand Creek. Each walk is combined with a short dugout canoe trip on the river.

All meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included during your stay.

Five-hour round-trip trek to the summit of Misty Mountain, a granite outcrop rising above the forest canopy. The trail ascends through primary rainforest with frequent stops for wildlife observation, spider monkeys, red howlers, poison dart frogs, toucans and macaws. The summit offers panoramic views over unbroken forest, with visibility exceeding 50 kilometers on clear days.

Lunch at the summit. On the descent, you stop at Charlie Falls for swimming in the cool cascades. Return to the lodge by mid-afternoon. The trek requires moderate fitness and comfort with uneven terrain, exposed roots and humid conditions (30–34°C).

Downstream by dugout canoe (30 minutes) to the trailhead. Two-hour walk through lowland forest with interpretation focused on forest ecology, nutrient cycling, symbiotic relationships between species and the role of rivers in seed dispersal. Moi Moi Falls is a multi-tiered cascade where lunch is served. The return canoe journey includes deliberate stops for bird observation, kingfishers, herons, caimans and occasionally capybaras along the banks.

Final morning at the resort: downstream canoe to Kilo 3 Creek, a narrow tributary. Short forest walk to Kilo 3 Rapids for swimming. Lunch creekside.

After lunch, return to the lodge to collect your belongings and transfer to the airstrip for the return flight to Paramaribo. Upon landing at Zorg en Hoop, transfer to your hotel in the city center where you collect any stored baggage. Evening at leisure.

Full-day excursion to two culturally significant sites. First stop: Jodensavanne (Jewish Savannah), the location of South America's oldest Jewish settlement, established in the mid-17th century by Sephardic Jews fleeing persecution in Europe and Brazil. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. The ruins of the Beracha ve Shalom synagogue (consecrated 1685) survive alongside two burial grounds, one for the Jewish community and one for enslaved Africans who worked the surrounding plantations.

Second stop: Redi Doti, a contemporary Amerindian village of the Lokono (Arawak) people. The visit, conducted with community permission, includes a guided walk through the village and introductions to traditional agriculture (cassava processing is often demonstrated), fishing techniques and craft production. This is an opportunity to understand how communities maintain cultural identity while engaging with modern Surinamese society.

Lunch included. Return to Paramaribo by early evening.
